Lord Zack's Star Wars Campaign Setting
The Zann Consortium is a crime syndicate that rose to power in the years between the Battle of Yavin and Battle of Endor. It was named for it’s leader and founder Tyber Zann. It’s rise to power began when Zann escaped from prison with help of famed smuggler duo Han Solo and Chewbacca, where he had been sent after stealing a Sith Holocron from Jabba the Hutt. After a brutal conflict, Zann made peace with Jabba, gaining control of some the infamous crime lord’s assets. Zann had also formulated a plan to seize the Eclipse after learning of the Star Dreadnought from data pods salvaged from the wreckage of the Death Star. Apparently, it’s computer databanks contained data on a number of hidden vaults used by the Emperor.
In preparation for this heist, Tyber Zann moved to increase his power. The Zann Consortium worked to amass a small, but powerful space fleet with exotic designs that could outclass even the Empire’s warships, including Zann’s flagship the Merciless. He ordered the kidnapping of Bevel Lemelisk, who was one of the designers of the Eclipse, from Kuat itself. He also discredited Prince Xizor, leader of rival criminal organization Black Sun. Xizor was soon killed by Darth Vader for this and other reasons, and his other main rival, Jabba the Hutt was killed soon thereafter. Zann briefly lost the Sith Holocron to the Empire, but infiltrated Coruscant itself to retrieve it. The Battle of Endor happened at the same time, allowing Zann the perfect opportunity to strike. He seized the Eclipse and used the wealth from the Emperor’s vaults to increase the Consortium’s power even further. He was responsible for fostering corruption in the early years of the New Republic, even influencing members of the new Senate. However, he apparently could or would not take control of the galaxy’s smuggling operations that Jabba the Hutt controlled before his death, leading to Talon Karrde to rise to power instead.
While many pirates and slavers associated with the Zann Consortium are indistinguishable from any other pirate fleet, Tyber Zann controls a personal fleet that rivals Imperial systems forces or New Republic battle groups. Zann, a former cadet at the Academy of Carida and student of Grand Admiral Thrawn, has a grasp of strategy and tactics that elude most other crime lords. This is combined with the fact that the Zann Consortium has obtained a variety of exotic weaponry, making the Zann Consortium’s forces formidable indeed. The Zann Consortium was producing knock-offs of the Virago long before MandalMotors reacquired the production rights to the StarViper-class attack platform and their Keldabe-class battleships were more massive than Imperial-class Star Destroyers. Much of their arsenal came from MandalMotors, acquired during a campaign of piracy in the Mandalore system that lasted until Tyber Zann called it off shortly before the Battle of Endor. Even afterwards MandalMotors sold new ships to the Consortium in fear of them restarting their attacks. They also used stolen Imperial designs, including the Aggressor-class Star Destroyer that the Empire never actually had a chance to build. The fleet was accompanied by well-equipped ground forces as well.
